Things to note when customizing motors

Date: 2025/7/4 15:29:38

When consulting, customers often ask, do you have motors for grinders? Do you have 300w motors? In fact, these questions are very general. What type of motor do customers need? We should provide the corresponding demand parameters and dimensions so that we can better evaluate. So in the motor consultation, what content do customers need to provide so that they can find suitable products as soon as possible?
1. Clarify application requirements

Application scenarios: industrial equipment, robots, kitchen appliances, medical equipment, automobiles, aerospace, etc., different scenarios have different requirements for performance and environmental adaptability.

Load characteristics: constant load, variable load, impact load? Is it necessary to start and stop or reverse frequently?

Installation method: horizontal/vertical installation, space restrictions, heat dissipation conditions, etc.

2. Motor technical parameters

Basic parameters: power (W/kW), voltage (AC/DC, low voltage/high voltage), speed (RPM), torque (N·m), efficiency (%).

Control accuracy: speed regulation range, position/speed control accuracy (such as servo motors, but Donghong does not do it).

Special performance: waterproof (IP rating), explosion-proof (ATEX), CLASS level - high temperature resistance (such as -40°C to 150°C), corrosion resistance (chemical environment).

Size and weight: installation space restrictions (length, width, height).

3. Motor type selection

DC motor: brushed (low cost, cost-effective) vs. brushless (high efficiency, long life).

AC motor: induction motor (general purpose) vs. series motor (high speed).

Stepper motor: open loop control.

Servo motor: closed loop control, high dynamic response, for precision movement.

Special types: linear motor, hollow cup motor, ultrasonic motor, etc.

4. Control and drive

Control mode: PWM speed regulation, vector control, CAN bus communication, Modbus protocol, etc.

Feedback system: Do you need an encoder (incremental/absolute), Hall sensor?

Driver compatibility: match the existing controller or require a customized driver.

5. Environment and life

Working environment: temperature, humidity, dust, oil, vibration, altitude.

Protection level: IP54 (dustproof and splashproof), IP67 (submersible), etc.

Expected life: continuous operation time, maintenance cycle (such as bearing lubrication requirements).

6. Materials and processes

Shell material: aluminum alloy (lightweight), cast iron (high rigidity), plastic (low cost).

Winding and insulation: copper wire/aluminum wire, insulation level (such as CLASSH level 180°C temperature resistance).

Bearing type: deep groove ball bearing (general purpose), ceramic bearing (high speed/low noise).

Heat dissipation design: natural cooling, air cooling, liquid cooling (such as electric vehicle motors).

7. Certification and compliance

Safety certification: CE (EU), UL (North America), CCC (China), RoHS (environmental protection).

Industry standards: IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association).

Special fields: medical (ISO 13485), automotive (IATF 16949).

8. Testing and verification

Performance test: load curve, efficiency spectrum, temperature rise test.

Reliability test: vibration test, salt spray test, accelerated life aging.

EMC test: electromagnetic compatibility (to prevent interference with other equipment).

9. Cost and delivery

Budget range: weigh high performance and cost (such as rare earth magnets vs. ferrite magnets).

Minimum order quantity (MOQ): small batch customization may increase the unit price.

Delivery cycle: time nodes for design, proofing, and mass production.

10. Supplier selection

Technical capabilities: Do you have experience in similar projects? Can you provide design support?

After-sales service: warranty period (such as 1-3 years), fault response time, spare parts supply.

Cooperation model: OEM/ODM, intellectual property ownership (such as custom design patents).

Key communication steps

Request for Qualification (RFQ): Provide detailed technical parameter specifications.

Design review: Confirm PDF drawings, 3D models, and bill of materials (BOM).

Prototype testing: Verify performance and optimize design.

Small batch trial production: Check consistency and process stability.

By planning these matters in advance, the risk of design rework can be reduced and the customized motor can achieve the best balance in performance, reliability, and cost. It is recommended to establish close cooperation with Donghong Electromechanical and accept the results in stages.
